I have several very advanced readers in my class, and a few who are really struggling. I thought it would be a nice idea to pair them up and have them work together. It has mostly been going well, but I want the students to feel encouraged rather than competitive. Any advice on this? Thanks

What makes you think they're being competitive? How are the students working together?

Offer some activities that bond them as they read.

You may want to start a reading program for low readers in your school called, "Read to the Dog." Studies show that "Read to the Dog" programs are successful in two ways. Shelter dogs get socialization, and struggling readers get a nonjudgmental audience.

A teaching strategy would be to help them understand the meaning of new words by teaching them first, that way when they do make it through the text the vocabulary will just follow.

I thik this is a great idea honestly. I always find that pairing the kids up like this usually works well and fosters working together and relationship building.

In my building we have a Tiering system; we are also required to differentiate the daily lesson activities to accommodate all students. This requires an incredible amount of lesson planning time, but what works best for my students is placing them in work groups. Competition to excel is a good thing as long as students are not disrespecting each other. I observe my students for at least one grading period before grouping, and each day during that time there is a story or quote on RESPECT posted for discussion. This sets the foundation for grouping and good citizenship within the class and the team.

This is a great idea! This way, kids can develop their own way of approaching new learnings. It could also teach them teamwork.

I am currently working for a city and have been with my current position for about a year. Work-life balance and colleagues are great. I came from private practice prior to my current position. There’s a strong demand for laterals now; and I am thinking about going back to private practice because current salary is substantially lower (about 40% lower) than what I can get in private practice. Has anyone here thought about going back to private practice for the salary boost?

How do you engage your students in more reading outside of what is required in the classroom? With each passing year I am finding an ever shrinking population of students, including honors students, who actually read beyond what is posted in social media or video games. Students willingly volunteer that they do not read and most parents see it as a non-issue. I tell my students that the best readers are usually the best writers. What are some strategies that you use beyond reading logs ?

I got an email last night from a 7th-grade parent because her son said I mentioned the words "male privilege" in class, and she is very concerned about how that is related to ELA (she said "reading"), and she is concerned about this being taught in public schools. To be clear, I didn't do a lesson on this subject but we did discuss rights versus privileges. I've had multiple parents contact the school/get upset with me because of things like his. It's exhausting... Thoughts?
