I went from private practice to a large city. I thought about going back to private practice from time to time but never felt like it was a good idea for me.
You have to ask yourself why you left private practice, what you’ve gained and lost from moving to government, and ultimately whether you can either avoid or accept the things about private practice that made you leave it in the first place.
For me, I left private practice because I hate billable hours and the overall environment of private practice, and no amount of money was worth going back. But you may have different priorities and drivers.
Instead of going back to private practice you could also look at other government jobs that pay better (that’s what I ended up doing) or in house work, which will probably also pay better than the city.
I feel that. Small government salary can tough. If you want to stay in municipal and you’re relatively mobile you could look at other cities that pay better, there are a few that try to pay closer to in-house market rates for the area.
You’ve got to do what’s right for you overall and make the decisions that you’re comfortable with. Maybe you can deal with the negatives for a few years while you bank the extra salary. Also, there’s nothing stopping you from starting to look and declining an offer if you decide it’s not right for you.
So what did you decide to do OP? Asking cuz I recently moved to government and I know I will reassess in a year. Not sure it’s for me.
