That situation could be a warning sign because at some point someone will realize they're paying someone to do nothing. You hear stories about people who get paid for years and spend their days on crosswords or online shopping, but it's more likely you'll find yourself on thin ice. It would probably make sense to get a project approved. It may preserve the job, plus, you can try to come up with a project that will look good on your resume if you do need to find another job.

I had the same issue. My advice changed based on how much you like that company vs you career path.
If you love the company but hate the role, pivot into a new role. Be valuable to someone there and get on their team. You probably have a some latitude to take some risks and define your own initiatives. I made some really good connections early on and I just kept going back to the people I clicked with. I serve as a digital product manager for our digital employee experience stack and have been approved for a promotion this year. Also if you work for a giant company this is a lot easier.
If you love transformation, get vanity metrics on our LinkedIn and start looking for other jobs. It’s always easier to find a job when you have a job.
