"I don't want a desk job"
*Picks the most white collar industry possible*
Good luck on whatever the next venture is, mate
Haha good one. Did it because the high earning potential tbh but now I see money is everywhere
Struggled with the same feelings when I joined consulting out of undergrad. Thought about construction mgmt, but ended up not doing it. Now I’m 6 years in and it would be much harder to pivot. If you’re feeling this way go ahead and find that role that’s better for you. Don’t wait to see if it gets better.
Ditto ^^ you can always come back to consulting I feel like
Go become a surgeon
I’m an experienced hire that came from industry and definitely agree that if you aren’t happy you should go ahead and find something more hands on - whether in construction or some other business role. I think consulting looks better on paper than it actually is in practice and I’m looking forward to leaving soon to get back into an org where I can build rather than just do high level theorizing & strategizing.
Thank you McK, just want to work in something where I can see my work physically. Seems like consulting is just this made up work
why? you'll make less money and have way less flexibility in your lifestyle
i have friends in civil eng that spend alot of times at sites and I don't envy their lives at all and id say I'm somewhat like you in that I like to be hands on - I just try get that out of my system outside of work thru hobbies
long term? idk. but I do think it's worth sticking around for 3-4 years to exit at an actually more senior role where you won't have to deal with menial / trivial nonsense all entry level jobs have
besides, spending a few more years differentiates you from the army of people that exit at 2 yoe
Pivot into tech so that you can get the fulfillment of creating something, and join a boxing/martial arts gym to fulfill your need to feel alive physically. I'm exhausted all the time (Muay Thai, grappling, about to start the strong man program they offer), I couldn't imagine also going into construction haha
Thank you for this suggestion SC1! Probably the best advice
I did operations management in a warehouse before and I will take white collar any day.
