Aren’t you nervous when you’re on a new brief at a full time job anyway? It just means you’re an actual human with actual vulnerability, which is a good thing. And the fact that someone else is paying you to have you come in a help then with a Pitch should tell you that you’re amply capable. I was nervous for my first freelance gig, too, which was also a pitch. The best part about freelance is that they already appreciate you the moment you walk in the door because you are helping them. Totally different mindset, and you’ll find that with their automatic appreciation, your ideas and positivity will flow
This is true!! I never thought about that!
The rule for feeling nervous is to start saying "I'm excited". Congratulations on the gig!
1. Don’t get too attached to your own ideas. Remember this campaign isn’t going to be produced in real life, and to some extent it’s less about what you think is good than it is about what their pitch team feels they can sell in a room. 2. Be flexible, especially when it comes to changes in the strategy. It’s bound to happen and the people making them are more stressed out than you are because their jobs might well depend on it. 3. Obviously you’re there to be a creative, but also remind yourself that you’re there to help solve a real business problem. 4. Be prepared for a lot of decisions by committee and when it gets painful, remind yourself that you’re getting paid.
Come to your concepting meetings with at least five ideas of your own. That will give you and your partner something to start w and you will get to something quicker. You’ll be fine.
Thanks everyone. I’ve got this! And I’ve been working on my British accent just in case.
I felt the same way before my first freelance gig. You’ll get into a groove and get the hang of things. That first gig turned into a 5 month long stint, so the possibilities are endless. Best of luck. You’ll be fine.
Usually within a few days you’ll feel like you’ve worked there forever. And as a freelancer if you act as if you’re a leader/people should listen to what you have to say people do.
It's not a job interview. You're a hit man/woman. When I was freelance I was nervous at first then quickly got paid to the point of being a happy mercenary.... in a good way. You want to change strategy?👍 more 💴. CD wants another round of ideas for the back pocket? Why not...more 💴. This weekend? Well I plan on being here of course....💴. All nighter?....coffee is on me...😜💴💰👍. Really builds a positive attitude about the crazy pitch process. Hell, I went so far as to show up after I knew the project was over, and they gave me another 3 day project cause I was there and reved to go.... 😂
Funny how little icons in place of words can make you smile...
Things might seem chaotic, obviously inefficient, and maybe you’re not even doing a lot (at first.) Be patient and remember you’re there to help. People will notice if you’re really getting it and helping. Things tend to ramp up as the gig goes, not down.
Just remember you’re the band aid and not the bruise. Figure out who’s important and always aim to deliver what they’re looking for. Leave your own agenda at the door.
You’ve got this. You’re only doing what you’ve done a million times before. You’re a pro and have the book to land you this gig . A pitch is a little more pressurized but I’m sure you’ve done those plenty of times before too. Just do what you believe is good. After all, it’s what has kept you employed in this business for a long time.
If you need video elements, Reach out to jellyeditorial.com - they do a lot of pitch sizzle work -
Just remember, you know this stuff and you're more educated in it than the client. Just be smart and personable, and you will crush it !
Do not let your imposter get a hold of you. If you go in prepared you will do beautifully. Nervous is normal. Remember If you think you aren’t going to do well you are implying they have poor judgement and I would imagine they selected wisely. Think of a internal cheerleader to shut your negative voice up every time it speaks. You can also do an evidence for and against list. For example - I won’t do well on a pitch as a freelancer. Write all the reasons this is wrong and why it could be right. I bet you 1 hour free coaching that you will have many more reasons that blow this thought in the garbage where it belongs!
Ie. you pitched x times before
You have been a part of winning pitches
Your work makes sense to them for this need
You are strategic ?
You are ....
You have x years of experience
You have been a part of successful teams
You have had some if not at least one great pitch mentor?
