Their lack of professionalism has nothing to do with you. You don't have to try and interpret that. They are an adult and if they have something to say and feedback to provide, then they can do so with their words.
Appreciate that. You are right—it says more about their lack of professionalism than my writing.
Honestly, if it's that bothersome, I'm all about holding people accountable. It may be uncomfortable, but I would write back something akin to "While I normally appreciate feedback, I'm unsure what this means and/or how it can improve my copy. I'd love to hear more." (or something like that.) Alternatively, try your best to let this go, as I agree with another commenter, "it's lazy and unprofessional"and in my opinion, ultimately not worth your time.
Yeah, you are right. I probably should have pushed back instead of obsessing over it alone. Next time I will just ask straight out what they mean—better to get clarity than spiral over vague nonsense.
I once had an editor who could provide brutal comments in notes in the computer files. I remember once he wrote, "Come on, man." The thing is, he was a good editor and in that case he was right, the paragraph that offended him was weak. And I fixed it. Not sure what to make of "hmmm" but perhaps it's a version of "Come on, man."
@deputy editor
That is solid advice. I might actually respond next time instead of torturing myself trying to decode it. Holding them accountable could clear the air fast.
Hmm, sounds like something terrible happened while they were making that feedback because what?? I’ve had vague feedback that I did not know how to incorporate before. That’s a bit next level.
Right? I sat there staring at it like it must mean the whole piece was trash. Vague comments just make you catastrophise.
I would ask to clarify the 'hmm' into something tangible i can work with. I swear editors just have bad days and go on power trips with some of the weird whiplash I get.
