Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

Layoff going on in Synechron ?

All you can really do now is continue doing your job to the best of your ability and don’t let your anxiety hinder you.
Tbh, I think it’ll help if you also show empathy for the people that you now work with. They’re probably just as anxious as you are considering what they just went through.
Personally, I’ve been on the opposing end of your situation so I know what it feels like to have someone new join after the first round of layoffs had hit. It certainly forms a negative bias in your head that is hard to shake off. And what stood out to me was that new person’s lack of initiative connecting with the ppl they would work closely with. He genuinely seemed lost and confused about where he fits in with the team tbh. I suggest having 1:1 syncs with individuals to understand them better and start building relationships now. Otherwise, you will always be considered an “outsider” and it could potentially become a hostile work environment.

Thanks for this! For the 1:1s, I’m talking to people I’ll be working with directly in my project. Who else do you recommend meeting? I’m not sure what to talk about with the rest (if not my product and given the company situation is tense and all of us working remotely)
Of course, you are nervous, it can be scary being a part of a company during a time when they are laying people off. But if you recently joined, hopefully, the company knew layoffs were coming and decided they still need your position filled, and/or they really wanted you a part of the team. But being anxious during this tie is completely nrmal

So initially they refused me. I came in through a reference and later when I spoke with my reference, they sent me the offer letter. I’m sure my reference spoke highly of me but I’m feeling so much pressure and scrambling to go through everything.
In the same boat. The Friday of the week I hired in, they laid off a THIRD of the company, unexpectedly due to VC funding round feedback. It's been 3 weeks since then and my anxiety to make myself value known constantly is through the roof.

What are some things you did in your first week other than the basic orientation materials?
I feel that. But that isn't your fault.
Oh, I see. It's normal to feel that way. We're in a challenging time and we just have to hope for the best. At the same time, there's nothing with being prepared and starting to look out for job opportunities just in case.
