I think how you start the year really sets the tone. I let my students know that they should expect me to be kind and fair and if they feel that I am not that they should speak to me. I try to guide them to make better decisions and I provide privileges as they demonstrate they can be responsible. I have found that catching them being awesome has been powerful. "Wow, you guys did a great transition it was both quick and quiet, thank you." " I know that you are mature enough to do ___." "I know I can trust you/count on you to do ___" I speak about the thinking that allows them to become more independent and self sufficient. If you encounter ___ what is the best option? I apologize when I have to interrupt them or when I make a mistake to model respectful behavior. I absolutely do not tolerate disrespectful behavior. I almost never involve admin in my classroom management or behavioral issues. I feel to do that is giving up your confidence and command of your classroom.
Continue building relationships with those students. Sit them down see what they need and ask them how you can help them and see how those conversations go.
