I keep hearing that “your first sales job sets the tone for your whole career,” which is stressing me out as I pick between a small startup with no process and a big company with strict scripts. What was your first role, and how much do you think it shaped your trajectory?

A job doesn't set your career trajectory, your results do. A person who "does their job" is a commodity who is dispensable. A person who delivers exceptional results is a valued asset. They're the ones who get recruited, promoted and make bank!

My first job in sales didn't really shape my trajectory, but it taught me a lot and set me up reasonably well for a career. I'm not sure where you work matters as much as how much you bring to the job, meaning how hard you're willing to work and how much you want to learn. If you've got choices in this job market you must come across as a strong candidate. Chances are you'll do fine wherever you land.

I was in sales support, and it taught me I did not want to be support staff.

It shapes your instincts but doesn’t define your future. A high-structure job builds discipline; a scrappy one builds adaptability. Either is valuable long-term.

I would go big co every time. You learn about why they are big, process, people and politics. Get that behind you then go smaller if you wish, big co is on your CV and will open many more doors.

Hey, OP, how’s it going?

While he thinks that its genetics/being naturally gifted that got them to where they are I believe it's the environment & discipline that made them successful. We are not from said communities but curious to hear your thoughts on who is more accurate.

Hey FishBowl Friends, so I’m currently trying to break into tech sales/FinTech and I feel that due to my previous work history, I might not look like the ideal candidate on paper but I’m an extremely fast learner and very coachable. I’ve been a manger at a gym, got my degree in finance, worked as a client advisor at a top 3 auto dealer in the nation and now I’m a project manager at a solar company. I really want something that’s remote and steady, any recommendations on how to spruce myself up?

I left my job about a year ago to relocate, make sure it was the right decision and start a side business in the mean time. Now I’m actively looking for a new sales position, have tons of experience, but am struggling to even get a response from job apps. I am wondering if this is because of my employment gap? I don’t have my side business listed on my resume because I don’t feel like I have enough positive “stats” to report yet given it’s new. Any advice or recommendations?

I was interviewed for a major tech player in the hospitality industry, had 2 interviews which for the first one the recruiter was late, and didn't confirm the interview while I emaild her to make sure I do have an interview. When she attended she said that there was no point of responding my email as we are meeting anyway. Later on I had 2nd interview with the hiring manager. After 45 minutes she said they will let me know...

2 months later and I am still waiting...

I have openings on our sales team. High intensity environment, startup culture. Great for someone looking to build new skill sets or recent grad looking to move into sales. “Job hopper” and “quiet quitting” are all schemes made up by boomers to make you think everything is the employees fault. When in reality people are just getting out of bad situations. Older companies do whatever they can to pay you the least amount and get the max work out of you. Except our generation will just leave amid we’re being mistreated, not complain for 35 years making 50k and 0 advancement.
