I have two years of automotive/aerospace manufacturing experience and am looking for new opportunities. I recently applied to a Solution Engineer - Commercial Manufacturing, Automotive, Energy (MAE) role at Salesforce, and it sounds like a great fit. Is anyone willing to offer me a referral or advice on how to move forward in the hiring process? Salesforce

Definitely a thing. More towards the older than the younger. I routinely tell people to take their dates of graduation off of their resumes and only list the last 10-15 years of experience on their resume to combat this.
I'm 66 and have been a top producer all of my life, including the company for which I currently work. Trust me, regardless of the stellar performance, recruiters and hiring managers turn their back to me because of my age. F**k them & the horses they rode in on.
It makes zero sense. I’m generalizing here, but millennials aren’t exactly known for their strong work ethic. While they may be innovative and further along in the tech arena, they also want a pat on the back just for doing the job they were hired to do. If I were hiring for my company, I would lean towards an older generation than younger in general, but really would boil down to the skills of the candidate.
I was just laid off, and they were legally required to disclose the ages of the people because if ageism, and while they claim it wasn’t ageism 26% of the workforce was laid off and not one person was under 40. People of a certain age have experience, obligations, and know their value. I’m sure it’s a thing, especially in a bad economy
It’s illegal but it definitely happens!
I don’t get a lot of green, young candidates as I direct AEs and AMs who have 5+ YOE— but I will say some of the older ones I’ve managed have been the strongest performers and the most agile in their ability to roll with changes (which are frequent).
That said I’ve also interviewed older individuals and it’s very hard not to have that bias— which has been both proven and disproven enough to me that I’ve learned to take everyone as their own unique use case and merits.
For context I’m 41– a younger Gen X’er….we appreciate the hard work, values and experience the “boomers” bring but also are amazed at the intelligence, innovation and optimism the younger generations are bringing.
Can u share which industry you’re in?
It happens. I was laid off at the age of 51. I applied for hundred of jobs I was qualified for. Once I removed dates from my LinkedIn profile and removed the oldest job altogether, I started getting more calls. Interviews that went well surprised me when a rejection letter appeared soon after. I’m not a blamer, generally. The age stuff is real.
I actually think it’s worse than that. I think it’s more like they want to know how close to 40 you are. Maybe I’m paranoid but I’m super young looking for my age (42) but I look 21. I honestly believe that especially with male managers they hire me thinking I’m 27 or something maybe 30. Then I don’t know what happens but I’m doing a good job and they seem to turn on me. Does HR do their background check and alert them they hired someone over 40? Also I don’t look black and I am. I look well to most people all different things - Italian, Brazilian, just White but a little tan. Then it’s kind of as if I’m walking on eggshells.
It most likely wasn’t the company but the leadership I worked under. The company I loved working for most - heartbreaking - the regional manager I worked under, when I became fully vested at 5years (so got LTD until retirement if I needed it) and all these amazing investment options in my retirement, she started making work so incredibly hostile although I was the top performer for almost six years I took a leave of absence.
This is what happens when you gut labor unions. Yes ageism is very real. And it will affect everyone very likely unless you have union protection. Diversity initiatives are too immature to tackle age diversity.
Thing is that DEI just allows corporations to exploit all races and genders. It's a huge opportunity for corporations. Age and disabilities on the other hand is where the real diversity comes in imo. Again I do live in Canada so race issues are not that prominent here as compared to South of the border..
Ageism is alive and well. Will be even more bias entering 2023 because of high layoffs competition and inflation.
