I like where I work but I really want to get paid more, have you ever used another job offer to get paid more in your own job? Is it a good tactic or will most places not bother?

The most a counter offer does is buy you a year to be replaced. You have now indicated to your employer that you are willing to leave and a loose end for them. This is only a tactic to use when you want to buy more time to shop around for better offers and not something to use lightly.

funny

In the experience of people I know it’s made it so they can stick around and get more money!

Some companies encourage it, but it's usually best to ask for a raise first, if they say no, than use another offer to let them know your valued. What you do after that is up to you based on your relationship with everyone above you.

like

Yeah approaching asking first I can see being a better way to do it!

I only got another offer to actually leave. Never countered to stay

I guess they don’t always do it£

I've never done this and don't think I ever would. A lot of companies will offer a raise in order to get you to stay after you've handed in your two weeks, but I wouldn't do it. I feel like once you've given notice, you've lost all trust within the company. Better to move on than stick around.

I guess but I’ll be honest I don’t have a lot of trust in my current work place to begin with!

Sometimes companies will make a counteroffer, but it seems like it would be a bad idea to take it. I mean, they didn't value someone for years, which is a bad sign. And if someone has gotten another offer, the company may see them as disloyal, which could create problems going forward. If anyone gets an offer it's better to take the new job.

Is disloyalty really a thing companies see in people looking around? That doesn’t seem a problem at all but maybe this is a UK/US difference thing.

The downside is if they do give you a raise the future raises are likely going to be less. Also you in order to successfully do it you really need to be willing to leave and there is a chance they will show you the door.

I mean even if they do show you the door you have another offer to take!

Yes

Nice!

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

Hey fishes, recently got an offer of 245k plus a bonus, but no specificity and at least 3% cost of living annual raise. My current job I make 150k plus a 20% bonus and an annual cost of living raise anywhere from 2-3.5%. Have been in my current position about a year. Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?
