I make $101K base salary as a Consultant/Specialist at Accenture Federal in Washington, DC. My husband is a teacher making $55K. We’re getting by with our mortgage and regular student loan payments, but it’s not enough to do much else. We also want to start a family in a few years. What move could I make to hit $150K base? So many of you are making unbelievable amounts… I don’t know how to keep up.
We left DC after a similar realization. We moved to Charlotte and bought a house (closer to the city) for less monthly than our rent was in Crystal City, with only 5% down. The house then appreciated and now we're pretty financially free.
Both of us also find higher pay down here despite lower COL, so it was a win-win.
If leaving DC is an option at all, that could be your ticket to keeping up.
Moved to NYC from NOVA. Here is brutal. I wanted to move to Cary, similar to D1, and should have done it.
Jump to D as a SC.
Agreed but noted that GPS work is generally less intense than commercial (of course there are exceptions). Hard to say without knowing your background, you can certainly try to apply for roles in commercial.
Move out of pubsec
Hm which PgM roles have you been applying to?
GPS is limited if you don’t have a speciality. You wouldn’t be making $150k+ without a jump unless there is a speciality/skill/knowledge that ACN is willing to pay for.
Network with leaders supporting cleared work, show interest in that type of the work. Work with your people lead and HR partner.
Go to DoorDash S&O
I was on the same boat as you. Made $101k as a lv 9 4 months ago in AFS. Made a jump to EY commercial making $140k as a SC. DC SC at EY top around 150-160. Manager based is around 165-200. Let me know if you have any questions!
Get higher security clearance = $$$
Your husband could be making way more if he teaches in DC. The teacher shortage is even worse out there and there's also always contracts/grants they hire teachers for. He needs to do some research and likely change schools.
Sheesh having to wait longer than 5yrs is excessive. I've worked for [a diff] state before and our vesting was 5yrs. However, our vesting also had reciprocity with other locales, so I'd suggest he look into it. And quite frankly, he should make sure that what he's shooting for is actually worth it. Pensions aren't as valuable as they used to be and sometimes it's easier and quicker to start over because other places have quicker/immediate vesting and higher match%.
While you might have higher earning potential now, I'm assuming you'll also be the one carrying your child and (at least statistically) doing the majority of caretaking responsibilities, so it will be medically critical that he increase his earning potential and that the burden of household finances as well as pregnancy.
To your point of negotiating, if there's any time he does have higher negotiating power, it's now. The shortage is so severe that there's nothing they'll really be able to do about it for years.
Need to jump firms tbh, aim for 20-30% raise for jump. Can always boomerang.
Consider Slalom's DC office
It depends on your experience and roles that you played on your projects at Accenture.
Based on others I've seen, AM with AFS translates to Consultant at Slalom s Commercial office.
Consultant pays up to 140k.
My starting pay at AFS in 2016 at CL9 Consultant was $100K. You should be at $120K.
Take a look at Avanade, I went from AFS l10 to l9 Avanade and they paid me 125 base. Didn’t even have to change my employee ID number. So promo with pay raise just by applying to another job within company.
Ahhh change a husband that makes more?
I would….🤣
