I moved to a pretty big regional firm that 75%+ of their client base is 1040s. I personally cannot stand 1040s. Anyone else go through this? How did you remain positive about them even though you dislike them? Did you adapt?

I hate 1120s and love a 1040. I also hate 1065. So.

I hate 1040s also, is this the only job you could find?

like

No, I’d say 40% of my work is 1040s and the rest is small businesses and a few multi state entities. Seems like I’m the only person who knows anything about the multi state stuff.

All I hear about is 1040 crap. They seem to legitimately get excited about them and I’m over here like bruhh FML

Took the job because I wanted to work on smaller businesses and I wanted better WLB. I thought their client base would have had more businesses.

How’s the pay compared to working on corporate/partnerships? I’ve been interested in transitioning to 1040s but don’t want to take a comp hit

I was put in a similar spot but never really ended up liking 1040s. Too much volume to manage to hit book of business target. 🎯 look for something else that you are interested in. With 1040 knowledge you can either work at an accounting firm or a family office for rest of your career.

The 1040s was an office specific issue the firm overall had a lot of other work so I changed teams and worked with people outside my office and developed skills that are in demand.

Any good recommended books on how to build a scalable product and team? I'm looking for recommendations for two areas: 1) in general laying the groundwork in a startup to have the tools and especially processes in place to scale, and 2) tactical focus on building a SaaS project. I've been promoted into a management role from Dev roots, so need to learn more PM processes to be an effective manager in day job, plus would like to start building my own SaaS solution.

Having thoughts about leaving Tax for a smaller Co that specializes in SALT credits and incentives... but could this limit me down the road experience wise if I decided to leave there? I have a diverse experience now, but I don’t want to be looked at as only SALT later.

Small Firm Question:
Working PA for the first time this year. Doing a lot of returns right now.

History of my firm: small (7 employees, two interns), was a single CPA show for 20 years. Cont.

I know I'm in the minority here (and I swear this isn't a brag) but is anyone else less stressed this busy season working from home, and finding issues focusing because of it? My work is getting done, but just very very slowly. I'm able to sleep throughout the night and not wake up early (which is a huge negative right now) and literally feel no need to stay glued to my computer as in prior years. Am I broken?

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

First-year tax staff that started end of Q3, and just had my first year-end performance evaluation meeting. Still a blank slate in terms of tax experience, but I honestly do have a slight interest in international tax. Brought it up and I was given some names to find some work opportunities in that area. Besides SALT, any other specialized areas I should try to get some experience in? Also open to any tips and tricks to help tailor my workflow and experiences for the months to come.

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!
