I had the word junior in my title with 6 years experience in 2018/2019 (long story) making $60k. Fast forward three years, one promotion and two jobs later, I just accepted an offer for a lead strategist role on a client I’m excited about with a $140k base + bonus and stock. (I got bumped to senior in 2020 which was year EIGHT).
There were younger people I worked with who had less experience, used mom and dad’s money to go to grad or portfolio school, and/or were better at politicking, that now have director titles.
It does suck, but I wouldn’t want ANY of the jobs they have. I went through a lot outside of work in those years that a lot of people with privilege don’t or won’t experience. I’m legally disabled and paid my way through school and my medical expenses and as a result couldn’t afford the fancy unpaid internships out of state.
Comparison is the thief of joy. You bring unique things to the table that those people don’t and your needs may be different than everyone else. Maybe you’re unwilling to enter into a toxic workplace for the sake of a title bump, or you are unwilling to take a better title somewhere that you feel the work doesn’t meet your quality standards.
Don’t lower your standards. Evaluate what is important to you and chase that. Don’t compare yourself to your classmates, their path is different and isn’t going to benefit you. Figure out what you bring that’s different than the average senior and sell the heck out of that. You care about your work which means you’ve already got momentum. 💓
SS1 this might have been the coolest thing I've seen people write in this platform. I wish there were more of you around here.
OP, you have your own journey and you should embrace it. Keep going and things will turn out the way you want it to be. Don't look to the sides. Look ahead and trail the path you are able to trail. You got this.
Took me 8 years to hit senior CW. There were some stumbling blocks on that path, including the Great Recession, but titles don’t get handed out like candy. Biz, politics, timing, charisma, track record and asserting yourself are all factors.
I need to work on all those things lol
its more about your portfolio than your title - when you’re looking for a new job

To be honest: that’s strange. I had 4 offers in 2 months and I’m not even looking. Not trying to demotivate you, but you could find out why. Can you asked the people you talked with why you didn’t get an offer? Just ask fair and square.
Do you have award winning work? But even more important: Do you have a book that’s different? A lot of people have the same kind of work in their books. (A bit of American comedy, and a bit of superficial lifestyle work) try to look at other books and try to build it in a way that you’re different than the others.
If you can make senior money ($110k to $120k) then i think title won’t matter much?
Yeah I agree with that. The money would be super nice.
Wow deja vu. I’ve been struggling with the same and think might be talking about the same classmate :)
Where they’re an acd matters though. Mid level at droga is different than acd at Vayner
Never benchmark yourself against other people.
Titles can be tossed out by some agencies like candy. BBDO has like 5 million CDs and few of any actually run an account.
If title is important where you are then try to make a path for a promo.
Get a criteria down for the promo from your boss.
Get yourself added to scopes in your new title / rate. Much easier to get a promo if client is coughing up.
Find out what it would cost to replace you. You can play that card also. GL.
It took me seven years. Just remember, those with the bigger titles don’t always mean they’re getting paid more. It’s just a way for the agency to bill the clients more. Focus on yourself and you’ll be great!
Just out of interest because I’m also struggling to “climb the ladder”, how many years experience do you have?

Ugh, sorry to hear that. Hang in there! You will get that role. :).
Win some an award or two. It’ll come quick.
