I’ve seen counteroffers work, but only if there’s a real path forward attached (like a title bump or better workload balance).
I’ve seen a few people happy after taking a counteroffer, but it’s rare. The raise feels good at first, but the same problems usually stay. For example, a friend got more money but still had a toxic boss and long hours. She quit six months later. Unless leadership fixes the real issues, a counteroffer just delays leaving.
I feel like every time I’ve heard someone take a counter offer it’s been a bad choice. It’s easy to fall into comfort and we’re all guilty of it sometimes but that’s why you need to push yourself out there more.
