I open LinkedIn and immediately want to log off. The LLM content machine is in overdrive. Every job and post now has “GPT” or “RAG” or “agentic workflows” in it. I’m not interested in building chatbots or summarizing PDFs for a living. Is there a niche or industry where data scientists still do classic work like forecasting, optimization, and real analytics without having to fake LLM enthusiasm?

To put it simply and humanely, unless a big flaw is discovered or something controversial happens, this thing isn't going away!

I'm so glad to see someone else with this sentiment. I was annoyed by "AI" before GenAI and it's only gotten worse. Companies that actually need revenue or make physical products and services are more likely to stay off the hype train I'm guessing.

I totally get where you’re coming from! The AI hype cycle is everywhere, and it can feel exhausting. But there are still plenty of roles where classic data science skills like forecasting, optimization, and deep analytics are in high demand especially in industries like supply chain, finance, energy, and manufacturing. The key is to find teams or companies that focus on solving real-world, data-driven problems rather than just jumping on the latest buzzwords. Sometimes the best analytics work happens quietly behind the scenes, without all the flashy AI jargon.

Currently scheduling “on sites” for a S&O role in CA. My referrer said they can hire as L5 or L6. Would like to land in the L6 bucket as I’ve heard 5 --> 6 is one of the more challenging promotions.

I’m looking for info on what the real difference is in responsibilities (manager vs IC, cross functional vs focused, etc) so I can focus on checking the L6 boxes during my interviews.

I’m also curious about whether this is something that I should just discuss with my recruiter directly?

I have 5 YOE in Analytics... always thought I wanted to be a DS, but every job (even the junior ones) required experience in ML development. I know the thought process and stuff but 'I' wasn't the one who did that part in the project. How to convince them that I could do the job without taking credit of others.

I’ve got about 20 years cross channel experience in marketing, split between big brands and startups, and I’m considering pivoting into a data science/data analyst role. I know it will initially be a step back in comp but is it at all realistic for a person with certificate level experience in data analysis but a decent marketing management background to expect $150-200k comp or is that mostly for degreed candidates (or not realistic at all)? Any guidance here is greatly appreciated.

Appreciate the input in advance.
