Typically, when I manage a team, we designate 1 night/ week for a team dinner. Anything more is optional.
I hate this. Was so close to quitting because of this even though I love everything else about the work. Fortunately just landed a project by myself so I’ve escaped for a few more months. I’m wondering if it might be more manageable in a non-American culture? Certain European countries I could see there being less obligation to socialize
You don’t have to explain anything. Just say that you can’t make it or that you have other plans.
I’m the same. I can generally do a max of 1 work related thing in the evenings a week.
SC1 You are spot in. I find German habits much more roductive in that work is done at work. Fewer hours are worked as a rule but evenings are considered personal time and going out is optional.
The problem with not going is that everyone else gets closer and you end up an outsider. All the perks end up going to the people who are closest.
By the way OP - I attend team events maybe once per month at most. My time is my time.
