HR isn’t your friend—it’s risk management in a blazer. If you think they’re there for you, you haven’t had to file a real complaint yet.
I keep my distance, HR does not care about you. Their entire job is to protect the company from liability. Don't come to them with complaints, especially about your colleagues or boss. Nothing good will come of it.
It really depends on the people and the culture. A well-run HR team can be a true resource, but transparency and trust-building need to be ongoing—not just when something goes wrong.
I only come to HR when I need their help with navigating the corp functions. I don’t come to them with complains, especially complaints against higher managers lol.
It will absolutely vary a lot. I do look at HR as a function of the business. If you do have complaints/issues, you really need to have your due diligence done in the documentation and not just expect them to go out of the way to figure it out. I’m not scared of HR, but a healthy level of suspicion can be good 😂
I never understood why people thought badly about HR. I found they were helpful when I or one of my team needed support for HR related areas. But I eventually found that when the people above you want you out, no matter of misconduct or violation of their own stated policies or procedures on their part will make HR stand up for you. Even my family member who is head of HR for a multi billion dollar international firm thought the HR dept behavior was odd and unethical when I presented them with the same evidence I gave to my HR. They advised me to sue for constructive dismissal, but also said they weren’t surprised at the HR dept’s support of my boss and said suing could be detrimental to my future career considering the industry I was in was small and well connected. I was screwed either way because HR was more interested in fulfilling my boss’s wishes than following their own written rules. The department should be called “company resources” because there is nothing “human” about what they do.
