I recently left a firm to go in house. A file I entered my appearance at the firm in is transferring to a different firm (was in progress before I left). I need to enter my withdrawal as new firm is entering their appearance. Would I just leave my old firm’s contact info on the signature line in my withdrawal or use my new business address for the contact info? Definitely overthinking this but things did not end well with my old firm

I would use your current business contact information.

Thanks! I just wasn’t sure since I’m in house. At my last firm, they prepared all my withdrawals for my signature and it just had their business address on it so I didn’t have to think about it.

Maybe this varies by jurisdiction, but shouldn’t your old firm worry about this? Yes you entered your appearance, but the client is your old firm’s.

Associate 1 - Exactly! I actually had a case from my first firm where this kind of happened. I never withdrew because partner was still involved. Partner missed a deadline like 7 months after I left and non-pros was entered. He couldn’t get the non-pros opened. Client sued the firm, partner and me since my name was still on the docket. Plaintiff’s attorney refused to let me out even once we could easily prove I no longer worked at the firm. It eventually settled (like two weeks ago) and the firm’s carrier covered everything but it was still a huge pain in the ass to deal with. So moral of the story is always withdraw your individual appearance.

My old firm handled this. They filed the motion for me to withdraw after I left — I didn’t even need to sign. Also if the case is being transferred to another firm, I would think there would be a forthcoming motion for the entire OG counsel to withdraw.

PSA: The grass is greener in a regional firm if you can lateral over as a partner. I lateralled over last year and my billable expectation is only 1700. I have my own clients and make about 100k (after bonus) more than I did as a senior associate. The upside is probably capped because top equity partners probably make 1.5 to 2 million here but it is all worth it for the WLB. I only take on what I want to do and I help out other partners only when I feel like it.
