I typed a long response yesterday that apparently didn't post. I'm a lifelong midwesterner (aside from a stint in New England, so also harsh winters).
1) Have your furnace/boiler serviced every fall and AC in the spring. Do it before the weather gets cold to avoid finding an issue on the first cold day! Keeping things like filters and ducts clean also helps your HVAC to run more efficiently.
2) Yes to cleaning gutters, that's really just a good idea year round. If yours don't have it already get the mesh that goes in them to keep out debris.
3) If you have storm windows drop or install them once you're past windows-open season. Some people also put plastic film on their windows for added insulation - I just switch to heavier drapes. If there's a draft around your windows and doors you can also get foam stuff to stick around them.
4) Cover any outdoor spigots.
5) During deep freezes watch out for freezing pipes. If you have PEX pipes they're less likely to burst, but if they freeze you'll still be without water (and the pipes coming directly into your house are unlikely to be PEX). Keep a light drip in your faucets, and keep doors to under sink cabinets open (especially if they're along an outside wall). Some people wrap pipes (I've heard that pool noodles work) in their basement. If you do have pipes freeze call a professional!!
That's just some house stuff, there's also winter prep for your yard and car.
