I recently switched markets and have been thrown into a lot of New York State court litigation for the first time. Prior to this my experience was primarily in federal court. Does anyone have any recommended reading to help me get up to speed?

Siegel's new york practice. I bought it but honestly never really read it because lazy. But heavily recommended by others. Make sure you get the latest edition because NY did some civ pro changes at the start of Covid

The Covid stuff won’t be in the 6th edition because it’s 2018. So make sure to buy the latest supplement.

Practice as if you are still in federal Court and you will be ahead of the game but prepare yourself for moving at a snail’s pace due to the Court.

like

Expect deadlines to never be followed. I also mainly work in federal court and have a couple NY Supreme cases, and it’s a struggle because nothing moves in the state cases. I had a clerk tell me to “stop posturing” because I was pushing back on extending yet another deadline. “Counsel, no cases in this court actually keep to their deadlines, don’t expect yours too” 🙄

like

New York Practice by Siegel & Connors should be a mainstay on your desk

like

I would look for NY and NYC bar association resources about state court practice

Deadlines are toothless, if you want anything to be adhered to be prepared to file a bunch of motions, which can also easily and unilaterally be adjourned 😂

Just got another rejection... Is exiting to FAANG or MB really this hard? Trying to go tech.. or mbb, but not getting anywhere. I have 2 masters (mba, ms) from top schools, been in consulting for over 10 years, I am confident that I know my stuff well..but still I keep getting rejected. Interviewed with Google, Amazon, Cisco, McKinsey, and a few others and every-time there is something that is not a match... are the hiring managers looking for like 100% match? That will never happen!!!

When drafting a brief or other submissions for court or arbitration, do you use words such as clearly, erroneously, etc. to emphasize certain points? Our managing partner says that we should, but all of the writing guides for litigators that I've read repeats the mantra "show, don't tell" and explain that most judges dread such words.

I know that the politically correct thing to do here is to do whatever the managing partner wants me to do, but I just wanted to ask for other ppl's opinion.

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.
