I would love for my future kids to follow my footsteps — I’m okay if they don’t make a career of it, but there’s something different about working for your fellow citizens versus just to make money and I think that’s important
My family has been in law enforcement for several generations. I myself just recently retired as a police major. However with the public sentiment towards police officers as it is today, sentiment driven by the mainstream media and on college campuses, I would not want my family in the field today. In today’s society you have prosecutors who don’t prosecute and judges who don’t hold criminals accountable. It’s become a thankless profession with the deck stacked against you.
Many people aren’t aware that since 2017, there has been and continues to be a great mass exodus of law enforcement officers across the country. Those with enough time to retire, are doing so earlier than they would have and the younger ones are moving into different professions. Currently nationwide departments are short by between 10-15%. Despite recruitment efforts, replacements for those leaving are not meeting the demand. Those that are being hired are not of the caliber of those who left. Inner cities where the need is the greatest are where the problem is greatest.
