I self-scheduled Thanksgiving, thinking I'd get extra hours, but then they cut me short that week anyway. Now December's schedule is up, and I'm working both Christmas Eve and Day... again. I've literally tried everything to get Christmas Eve off - preference sheets, requesting it off, offering swaps, and talking to my manager face-to-face. Always get shut down because I'm days, not nights, or "it's not fair," or requests aren't allowed for holidays. Any ideas? This is my fourth year trying.

Ugh I am sorry to hear that. I always volunteer to work the holidays so others who have a family can have those days off. Some of my coworkers will offer an extra $50 to a person to cover the shift for them and that usually works.

I'm sorry 😢 I hate it when I have to work on Christmas. Working both Christmas Eve AND Christmas day is extra cruel. I don't know what you could do about that if your org doesn't have some policy in place to prevent that kind of scheduling other than ask a coworker to cover for you, which doesn't seem like it's got a good chance of working.

I’m in a tough spot—still waiting for conflicts to clear and out of the blue, a partner reached out regarding a project that they’ve staffed me on. They want my availability to begin working on the matter next week…how do I handle this? I haven’t given notice, but expect to do so soon…I don’t think it’s prudent to start a new matter esp. since I know I’m leaving…but I can’t turn down work with a straight face (especially because my hours are in “checked out” mode)…

Comforting others:
When someone tells me bad news regarding their health, I say everything I am supposed to say (I’m sorry to hear that, I’m here for you, etc) EXCEPT “everything is going to be ok”. Because I can’t guarantee that and I really don’t know if everything is going to be ok. I was taken aback recently when a friend told me I am calloused and cold-hearted for not being able to say those words. Is she right? Should I start saying this for the purposes of providing comfort only??

Any advice on how to tastefully tell your manager that you no longer want to be a charge nurse anymore? For us being in charge is having full assignment 3p-7p & being responsible for assigning pts , communicating w/ supervisor about various issues, making the assignment for next shift, and a mini report about each pt for the next charge. On the weekends, same responsibilities but 7a-7p. We don't get any additional pay for being in charge and I'm sick of the added responsibility and stress of it.
