A good manager can tell which members of the team drove the project success or the ones that were just riding along. Sadly, this doesn't usually happen and the ones that are more liked or speak the most get the most attention.
It doesn't always work that way, many times there are companies that denote two groups with two strong leaders where the performance of the groups can result in obtaining a promotion.
Of course, it is competitive but most of the competitiveness you see now in student instances, many companies have modified their organization charts to avoid confrontation between minds and rather project teamwork so that they work better.
Every work environment is competitive, so I don't think that engineering will let it be, I think that now we have more formality and fewer bosses in companies for engineering teams.
Engineering in many sectors has evolved from competitiveness to recognition of achievements. I recently had some teammates where one of them had less than 1 year of experience in the company but his desire and training made him stand out among all of us, when we did In the evaluation we all agreed that this person deserved to evolve even more and we voted for him to be the leader in the next project.
