How early is too early to ask for a raise?
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

Nothing is ever final
Fair. That’s very true
I always assume the range is fixed, but within the range there's usually some room to negotiate. It all depends on the context and even the timing. We're currently in an employer's market, and organizations may not be willing to negotiate, so that's something to keep in mind.
That’s a great way to approach it. Thank you!
That depends on where the range falls in the market. If it’s lower, it has to be flexible, or I’ll just pass. Small counters seem just as hard because what if you find they are flexible? Then you have to make a bigger ask, and it’s a lot of back and forth.
Finding out what everybody else makes will save a lot of headaches later on. Once you know the general numbers, you can then prioritize what makes sense to you through the negotiations.
