Thanks. Ive spoken to a few alum to get a sense of its rigor. Seems like a good education but doesn't open incremental exit opportunities. Did you consider the program vs MBA if youre into ID? Would love to go but bird in hand with MBA.
MPA-ID is a super competitive and quant micro+macro econ-heavy program, probably the hardest Master's to get into at HKS (more than regular MPA and definitely MPP). It is very fast paced, and reputed to be more intense as the other curricula - designed as a sort of boot camp for future Ministers of Finance.
It is reasonably competitive with top tier MBAs especially if you want to do public sector work. I didn't attend myself but worked with lots of alums in the international development sector. Lots go to MBB or IB/PE, many others to the DFIs (eg World Bank), and some follow their hearts and go into national governments, NGOland or academia.
I'm fairly unusual - did an MPH and then PhD work
Friend from previous boutique did MPA-ID and then exited to McK > national DFI > big pharmaco. Know lots of similar alums in int dev, primarily with DFIs or Foundation side now if not still in consulting.
If you're looking to definitely exit into private sector, MBA network probably stronger - esp with your offers in hand - unless you have a strong pref for consulting and the Harvard name
Thanks for sharing. These kind of data points help. I'm looking at DFIs coming from my in country health NGO work as a logical next step so seems to be a fairly well trodden path you're aware of. An advanced degree seems to be an unspoken need for certain gigs.
Are you still at BCG? Did you consider DFI work yourself? Would appreciate your insights. Can PM if more comfortable.
Yep, at BCG. Feel free to DM
