I started a new job last month, and it almost feels like they speak a whole other language here. Do you guys also refer to store theft as 'shrink'? I swear I thought we had an in-house therapist until I found out what was actually being spoken about. What's the lingo at your store that stands out?

I learned a lot of interesting terms in retail. Like the difference between asset protection and loss prevention…it still so confuses me 😂

It’s pretty common. Sometimes it encompasses all theft both internal and external. I feel like specialty depts really have their own language that can’t be used anywhere else but that dept

Yes, “shrink” is the weirdest innocent‑sounding word for theft and loss. I’ve also heard “units,” “door swings,” “conversion,” and “LP” thrown around like everyone knows what they mean. It really does feel like learning a new language for the first month.

Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??
