I once took a job because I really needed to take something. And I really didn't like it from day one and thought I'd make a terrible mistake. But over time I got over it, really. Not saying that would happen in your case. But it is surprising how we can adapt to things and what appears awful turns out to be not so bad once we get used to it. Anyway, be open to that possibility. But if it's truly soul crushing, definitely start thinking about an exit strategy of some sort.
I also worked for a big steel manufacturing company early in my career. The company wasn’t so bad as much the specific plant I worked at. It had a huge culture problem. Extremely racist! Can’t stress that enough! I continued working there thinking things might change because the management did slightly change but sadly the overall impact was too low. I worked there for few years till a point came that I couldn’t tolerate it anymore and hence switched jobs. I wish I would have switched earlier but life cant be lived looking back. I take it as a learning experience that nothing is more precious than your personal wellbeing.
I would hate to demotivate you but every person is different in how they handle challenging situations. Diamonds are formed in coal mines. Look for red flags that don’t match with your set of values. If most of them are not matching, I would suggest switching. Also remember that no place is perfect. Every company/corporation will have their own pros and cons.
Best wishes!
There’s always that pit of despair moment. You’re new. You don’t know where you fit or what to do. It makes you question leaving your old job, etc. I’d stick it out a bit to see if that’s the case.
But, I did quit a job after 4 weeks once. It was a horrible culture! The guys called the women babe and honey and were constantly asking us to get them coffee or pick up their dry cleaning.
Sorry to hear that
I did. Yes, the feeling lasted but 3 years able I was able to answer the question "why do I hate it so much?".
while you search you'll still be able to figure out if it's just a transition period or something else.
Then once you get an offer you can decide, if ou pinpoint the issue you can always try to negotiate better conditions. Or if you like it in the meantime, it's never too late to refuse the other offer
Yes. I needed to leave a job after a decade because the culture and workload had become too much for me and my family. I didn’t want to but had to make a change. I was initially excited about the new company and position because it was a great opportunity, pay raise, etc but once I got there I began to see all the layers of nonsense and toxicity. I also started realizing this was a step up but not necessarily the responsibilities and job functions I was most passionate about. It’s a tough situation for sure so just try to protect your mind, keep the door open for other opportunities and trust yourself to make the next. EST decision.
Its okay to take a job and not love it, many of us have been there. I would say try to stick it out and see if it gets better but in the meantime, it doesn't hurt to apply for other roles and see what else is out there.
The soul crushing days started 3 months into it and 7 months into it I'm still looking everyday because I can't afford to leave.
Can NOT do a job that is not satisfactory..you will wither away and be miserable....and make those around you miserable. Look for something that you are passionate about!....makes life a lot easier....good luck.
