I studied media hoping it would lead me into the industry which it did—but the reality of my job often looks nothing like what I learned. Are you using your degree in your current role, or did you end up learning most things on the job?

I feel like uni taught me more about deadlines, how to write, how to focus and work with others than anything else (I studied English lit and creative writing)

I agree, for most students it’s a way to learn about social skills and ways to use them

Most of what I use day to day, I learned on the job. The degree gave me a foundation, but the industry moves so fast that real skills came from doing, failing, and adapting.

I was lucky enough that I was trained up on my first job with the skills needed and have been able to take those elsewhere too

If I get laid off, I have a previous colleague that started a cybersecurity company. I would love to get involved on the business side of it. Any pointers on skills that are attractive in this realm for a startup? Would be mostly (if not all) federal defense contracting clients. I’m currently in Deloitte’s cyber risk practice but my background and passion is in accounting and finance, and business operations. Graduated in 2017 so still early career.

… any suggestions on courses (self-directed or more formal) to learn SEO?

I’ve been an editor for a number of years, but always pulled and pushed to handle other crises that show up daily, and learning by doing doesn’t appear to work in the world today.

Thanks for any guidance offered.

Tell me your craziest experience working with a TV network. Here comes mine:

I'm American, but my family is mostly Colombian. I was told my aunt and cousins would come here for 2 weeks. I discovered they were going to be paid to appear in a famous Hispanic TV show, where a "judge" receives a case, hears the plaintiffs and defendants and renders a verdict. But of course, it's all fake and payed 😂 turns out she wanted me to go there (even though I don't work for that TV network) so she's sure she'll be paid at the end of the show. Wth did I just do.

On the news, there was a report that "stress" causes negative health effects. Um. OK. Don't people feel "stress" just by being alive? Like, what would be the control group that you could measure the results against? I don't know why, but it always makes me wonder

One of my direct reports has asked about going part time. They currently manage special reports in a bi-weekly publication, working closely with sales, freelance writers, and an internal designer. Job duties are primarily project management and editing/proofreading. As the first read on articles, they need to have an understanding of the material (business/regulation). Has anyone had experience with job sharing in this type of a role?
