It's good to ask basic questions just to make sure everyone is on the same page. But it can be helpful, or tactful, to precede them with something like, "just for the record, is this..." or "just to clarify, is this..." That establishes that you're asking the question to get the basic answer for the record, not because you're somehow confused.
I totally agree with that.. Sometimes the simplest questions really are the most important. A question should not make others doubt your knowledge. Accounting’s all about getting those principles right, and asking questions shows you’re committed to understanding things deeply. I say ignore the haters, period.
Amen
Have you ever managed any staff? Sometimes these questions are red flags to someone just wasting a lot of time not getting work done the right way. I often ask Junior staff to repeat back what I’ve asked for just to make sure they understand and so they know that if they deliver that my expectations will be met and no one will have wasted any time.
I probably would be the way you described it. Do you ever qualify your questions “I know plenty about x, but I’m going to ask what’s going to sound like a real dumb question…”
Speaking generally, you really do need to understand the basics to get anything else. There are so many odd situations or specifics that come up where you do need to question what might seem like a ‘no brainer’ to some. I can understand it comes off like I might not know, but just asking for clarity or better understanding shouldn’t be faulted.
My take was always ask the question that helps you understand the issue. If they fire you for it, at least you now have a good understanding of that item. Because if you don’t and you just do something, you will either get hired eventually and haven’t learned anything, or you will be around doing the wrong thing or something you don’t understand for years
Healthy skepticism is mandatory. Ask for clarification any time YOU deem it necessary.
Water over 40 years, I still ask for T-accounts and an explanation of the entries. Don’t let them “eleventy-seven you.”
