Leaving public accounting was the best decision I made for my mental and physical health. I make $250k as a Controller with somewhat flexible hours and I rarely work late nights or weekends. Living in Dallas with my husband’s salary too we are very comfortable. I get to spend lots of time with our 3 kids and take them to activities. know I’ve left a lot of money on the table but my happiness is worth way more.
This is surprising to me, thought controller was a sweat shop role. Shocked y have wlb
Reality starts to hit with some of those goals we set early on. Kids, family, burnout, wanting life outside of work, etc. Figure out what's best for you now and pursue that.
When I got married and had kids, everything changed for me. I started to really value work-life balance and stopped caring so much about the hustle of climbing the career ladder. It’s okay to be satisfied where you are—especially if it means having a life outside of your job.
Burnout?
I know the feeling, like you “couldn’t do it” or weren’t good enough to make partner. But I left public and it’s so much better on the other side. I’m still client facing technically so it’s great for me.
