I'd probably tell them some version of the same thing. "Everyone is replaceable" or something to that effect. When I first entered the workforce, I had some naive delusions about working hard being enough to guarantee job safety. As it turns out, it doesn't always work out like that.
Very rarely is your career a straight line. There will be changes that you make, changes outside of your control, and everything in between. Letting yourself adapt to those changes early on will save a lot of heartache through the process. The only consistent thing is inconsistency really.
Very true. Most of my career was spent in advertising as a CD/CW before transitioning to UX.
I admire your honesty, even though you're going to scare the kids! Seriously, people starting out should understand that bad things can happen to very productive people. When layoffs happen there's usually not much you could have done about it. And talking about it honestly removes whatever stigma may still attach to it.
Believe me, I elaborate on both good and bad, like for every big agency win, there was a big agency loss for someone else. And layoffs don’t mean you were bad at your job. Every job fair I attend, students are looking for a “safe and steady” place to land. I also teach college courses and I haven’t scared a student away yet.
I think it is just as important to work on soft skills as it is to work on hard skills! continue to network, meet people, etc.
Soft skills is a good one - noted.
