Does anyone actually know what “True Strategy” even is anymore? I swear so many people talk about it with little more than some vague idea of what it is.
And Deloitte competes with MBB on a ton of work, especially if you’re doing Target Operating Models, Organizational Design, or M&A strategy, CDDs and value capture (which is honestly what I’d consider to be the ‘true’ strategy work), so I’m not sure why you think the work you’d be doing at MBB is “oMg So MuCh MoRe StRaTeGiC”
Also, if you’re worried about culture, MBB will definitely be more cutthroat, and more ‘Up or Out’ than any of the Big 4
Tech implementations seems unlikely.
Are you planning to join as entry level with the recent grads? I'm not sure how else you could position yourself with less than a year of experience. Then they're likely to ask why you didn't apply at their firm out of undergrad. If you did apply, they'll want to know what has made you a better candidate now.
@Partner1 this makes more sense now, I see your point. Curious, does the logic you wrote apply to candidates that didn’t land an interview to begin with? For ex: applied their senior year of undergrad and didn’t land a first round invitation, but wants to apply the following year after working at a different firm 1 year post grad?
Mentor
Why is D not a good fit for you, and why is MBB a better fit? They’re going to ask, so you might as well have an answer god enough to leave during a time like this
I would agree with @BCG1.
The true strategy work you're looking for doesn't exist as most people outside of MBB seem to think. Deloitte is doing things that 3 years ago some BCG partners probably didn't take seriously.
If you're dead set on "strategy" and can't shift to another team at Deloitte, I would strongly consider trying for a boutique vs a MBB. MBB is big enough that you'll still get thrown on varying kinds of work.
At least with a boutique their offerings are more narrowly defined and you're in a smaller pool to be picked and staffed.
Apply in the fall - ie September. - for a 2021 start. That’s when we typically set targets for the following year.
My only advice would be don’t just cold apply, do anything you can to get a referral
With both McK and BCG, my referrer organized a bunch of phone discussions with practice leaders (that didn’t involve cases) and then I moved straight to final round interviews in an office. It can definitely happen.
Had a few MBB recruiters reach out once I hit 3 years at D and just interviewed and got the offer, you could try getting some good projects under your belt and go that route too?
Ds1, were you in GPS?
All well and good that you want to leave, but be careful letting that show, especially in times like these. The last thing you want to happen is for someone at D to realize your lack of commitment and for them to axe you. Buckle down, work hard and good things will happen.
That makes a lot of sense. I’ve been very tight lipped about this (no one knows except my SO and parents), and I have no intention of telling anyone at D until I put in my 2 weeks notice (and maybe not even then).
Subject Expert
Next year probably. Economic recovery is expected by mid-2021 (at least by current estimates) and that's likely when hiring will fully resume.
Following too. How does one secure a referral for the recruiting process?
