Make up some excuse why the second role won’t work for you. Tell him that you are allergic to back office compliance work for example
At this point you should ask yourself do you love the company more or love the role more. If they won’t give you the original one, then be prepared to walk away.
If I were in your shoes, I’d tell recruiter that you’re open to going through process for other role but ask about if you’re still eligible for original role at all.
You’re maybe making an assumption that you were the best candidate for that original role. It could be possible that they don’t want to lose you as a candidate and they’re offering you another opportunity.
Try to get more clarification from the recruiter or hiring manager on why they feel this new role is better or why you’re not a fit for the original role.
Keep it in the back of your mind. If this is a larger reputable company then probably not a big deal, but if it’s smaller than I’d take note of it along with any other red flags/pros/cons as you’re considering your potential offer.
