I am a fourth year attorney and am on track to be partner of a small but well established ID firm in 2-3 years. Our bread and butter is ID but I have the freedom to take on any matters I like.

I do not want to be doing ID forever but I really don’t know what comes next. What other similar but more advanced (and better paying) fields of defense litigation are out there? Is the next type of civil defense litigation just going out and being hired by private companies?

ID partner here. I have a background in criminal defense. I used to do a lot more but now not so much. I branch into the occasional out of pocket client every now and then and it’s almost always better hourly rate but a bigger AR headache. Try for insurance bad faith counsel as hourly rates are usually higher. I also just took my first election law case which is a nice change of pace. I find that seasoned lawyers with high stakes litigation experience are always in high demand even in areas they aren’t necessarily well versed in because general litigation skills are so versatile.

Hi, new here.

Is there a book or something I can read about first party property defense. Just started working at a firm and they basically threw me into the ocean to swim with no guidance whatsoever.

For those that went in house with an insurance company how many years of experience did you have and how is it? Frankly it seems attractive to me: slightly to better salary, no billables. Nor am I attracted to achieving any kind of “status” with my career. A solid six figures to live life is pretty much the goal at this point

It’s Friday night at midnight and I just got out of work. I am new to FPP defense. So far it’s soul crushing. I feel like a robot just doing the same pattern pleadings and discovery over and over. Does it get better or do I need to plan my exit to a different field ASAP?
