I was part of a layoff, even though my performance reviews were stellar. Now I'm questioning my worth in the industry. How do you bounce back from this?

Take a beat for you to feel what you feel and realize you do have value. The decision they made was likely not personal… but a number thing… don’t duel on this too long… ask for feedback from those close to you and when ur ready move on and start drilling your next opportunity, it’s there. You got this.

Realize that you being let go isn't your fault. If your company's operations manager or CFO did their job correctly, they'd be able to retain talent regardless of lost revenue. I was also the subject of a mass layoff despite stellar performance reviews. The management at my agency did a 1:1 match, meaning your paycheck came directly from the clients you worked on. A good company will manage the books so that all revenue is viewed as a company resource that pays for all its talent. This requires someone with more than 5 brain cells, which doesn't feel like the norm in a lot of cases. Their loss is someone else's gain. Lots of good people are being hung out to dry because of company mismanagement.

I had the same thing happen almost exactly a year ago. It’s not easy, and it hurts. I started going to the gym everyday, and that helped keep my routines somewhat in place as I searched for a new job.

It’s unfortunate but that is the reality of the world today. Hopefully more workers realize it and begin organizing to use their collective power to change things for the better.

In the short term just have to put yourself back out there and always be open to new opportunities. No reason to be loyal to your team or company when they aren’t to you.

I'm in a similar boat, I received top performer awards three years running, and then unceremoniously laid off in January. It's been tough because I've only worked for two companies doing in-house design for over two decades, so my portfolio doesn't have the diversity you'd expect from someone with my experience level. I wish I had some concrete advice, but I've been mostly focusing on applying, learning new skills, and looking for freelance work to get that diversity that I lack.

I do leadership coaching for emerging leaders (and I’m a marketing consultant). I’d be happy to hop on a call with you to support! No charge of course. It’s normal to lose some confidence in this situation, and the fact that you’re proactively looking for support is stellar!! Don’t do it alone, that’s key IMO. Happy to talk through with you and help you recover, shoot a DM if interested!

Understand and accept this: the decision to let you and the others go was made by someone you never met, who has no idea who you are, who has never seen your work and likely has no clue what you do.

This was purely about "optimizing efficiencies" aka cutting headcount to reduce cost and/or juicing the stock price for a short-term dopamine hit for the shareholders.

I promise you are not alone.

Lay offs represent nothing except a financial decision. Do NOT take it personally but do give yourself the time to go through the stages of grief. I was laid off countless times during the 2008 recession. Many of the people rehired me for freelance, which is when it became obvious that it wasn’t me or my work, but they just had to pick people. The market is tough right now, so give yourself time to recoup, then work on your materials, learn new skills and veg while searching, and if you don’t have a therapist, try and get one. You’ll get through this!

Any tips on how to deal with this…my entire team was let go today (was 5, now just me). We functioned as the Marketing team for 4 brands and primarily focused on product launches and sustaining social media content. My plan moving forward is to only focus on the top revenue driving product launches for now and say “no” to basically everything else. Would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation and can offer some advice.
