Omg that’s a huge jump if you teach high school! For me it’s 5th grade - I’m usually in 4th and idk what happens the summer between but the kids turn into monsters. My favorite is a 2/4 split!!
Ahh! I am a fifth grade teacher (I’ve also taught 6th) & I was moved to teach 4rth grade a few years back. One of my toughest challenges ever, I was so glad when I got to move back to 5th. It’s amazing how different the 2 years can be.
Rising Star
For a long time, I would've said middle school. Then I took a job at a middle school, and I'm kind of loving it.
Middle school and high school
At my middle school, most of us have taught together over twenty years; we must be immune to the smell, as we love teaching this age!
I wouldn’t want to teach anything below Grade 3. I don’t have the patience to support children that young. I take off my hat to anyone who does.
Unless you have a multi subject credential it seems like you would be out of compliance or mis placed. How does this work for you? Can you ask for a transfer to a reasonable grade level?
None. Leaving the profession due to student & parent disrespect and Admin failure to support its staff.
I had a previous career as an Art Director and Graphic Artist, but I want to work half time and from home. I want to concentrate on doing my own personal artwork, which I’ve neglected for years. I’m looking around and will be putting out feelers for Contract or Freelance work.
Why not a new school where you can teach the grade level you want vs a new career?
I’m not against leaving teaching, I’m just trying to see why you would leave the career vs leaving the school?
Anything less than 11th grade, I'm out at this point.
Any of the K-8 grades. Grades K-4 is like herding cats; teaching 5-8 is like trying to grab a bouncing cube-shaped Super Ball of hormones.
I think high school to first grade would be a huge transition? The skills needed for one don’t really match the other, no offense meant. How could a school or school district figure out that transition, doesn’t make a lot of sense, especially in that direction. I’d be looking at another school or district, that’s just to weird.
That change makes no sense based on teaching license. (Although I once had a high school English teacher that came from kindergarten- not a good semester (that’s all she was allowed to do) as she treated us like kindergarteners! )
I think middle school teachers are very special. But no I could never. 😬
From High School to first grade?!? Isn't that a completely different certification you would have to get? Are they paying for it?
Craziness!
Are you even qualified to teach 1st grade??
I was wondering the same thing, that's a stretch from high-school levels. I feel for them, lots of shuffle with no account for the teachers. 😢
Are you certified in both high school and elementary? There are plenty of high school openings if you want to switch schools or districts.
I am certified 7-12; I would never want to teach elementary. It's best for everyone, especially the children, if I stick to high school. Not enough patience or cheerfulness.
I’d be pushing it with even 4th/5th and above. I am passionate about 1 and 2. Even my supervising professor during my student teaching knew it. 🤣
Anything above 3rd grade
I’m being moved from 5th English to Early Childhood Special Education. I can relate somewhat. I’m being moved only because I’m SPED certified. I have absolutely no experience with 3-5 year olds and I don’t want to! Hoping to transfer to a different school. Maybe you can do the same?
Everything above 3rd grade
Kinder…..I would find another job if that was my only option.
your opposite; I subbed in a high school for a week and a half after 20+ years in elementary, I was so happy to get back to my kiddos. It wasn't just the students, it was the whole culture. It all felt so foreign, despite being in the same field.
