Great question. I’m in sales - not quite the same industry but also male dominated. It’s tough because the line is fine between being ‘bossy and firm’ and simply ‘arrogant and entitled’. I learned sometimes it’s better to be perceived as the latter. Really always depends on the surroundings
I have found that I have to work 5 times as hard and have 5 times the knowledge as my male counterparts to gain the respect the construction industry. You also have to draw a line and never let the males cross it. I am perceived as a bitch, but very good at what I do. I'm ok with that.
They are going to call you A B- anyway behind your back. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Personally, I don't care what those guys call me behind my back, they don't have it in them to say it to my face! As long as the check cashes….. IDK If you seek comradery, recognition, and happiness while working in a male-dominated industry…you will be very disappointed every time. Get your needs met elsewhere by volunteering, family, and friends….wherever you can get it.
