I work with a bully (partner). I've built relationships with the other partners. They trust my work, and I've brought in four institutional clients.

The bully's behavior varies from petty (snarky comments, berating, cussing out associates) to sabotage. Several have quit. Most partners recognize the issue. Some want her disciplined, but others say "we have to work with assholes" and claim other firms are the same. Is this true?

I think nothing will happen to maintain harmony among the partners.

If you're leaving, leave the issue alone unless the behavior arises to the point where you can get money if you sued the firm. Best revenge is if you take the clients you brought in

Done. :)

One bad apple spoils the bunch. I and I know numerous other people have dealt with it.

It is super frustrating that no of the partners stand up to the bully/terrible partners.

If you’re leaving bc you’re dealing with an 🍑 🕳️ , that’s a bad move. They exist in all facets of life. If you’re leaving for better pay or deals or autonomy, that’s different. Having been all around big law and in house, yes, some places are better. But every places has an 🍑 🕳️.

I appreciate your--and all the other commenters'--feedback. Lots of good and different perspectives.

Give it right back. She screams. You raise your voice back. She snarks. Snark back.

Hahah, there is an associate who does that. He's probably getting fired for being "insubordinate." It's just not my style.

FYI, I've already decided to leave. I have in-house offers from two clients and a competitor. Just trying to gauge where I should go from here.

like

Good advice. I spoke with my clients yesterday and Friday, and they've agreed to come with me. One of them has to check with their chain of command.

If you have all these offers you just leave? What is your question. I work with a lot of assholes. It doesn't sound like the firm isn't aware if many people have quit as you say. In your exit interview, feel free to divulge whatever you want about the troublesome partner but this isn't your fight anymore.

like

I did leave! I accepted another offer and am taking a break in between jobs.

I've already explained the problems to the managing partner (and others). I am not the first. Others have left after not making any progress. Some of the partners thanked me for advocating for the associates who deal with the brunt of it. But the asshole partner is the managing partner's protege, so ultimately nothing was done.

The firm's current partner :: associate ratio is now 4 :: 1.

Agree that this isn't my fight anymore. I did what I could.

Is it bad manners or just a bad idea to go back to a recruiter if they got you a job that wound up being a bad fit?
For context, I don’t think they misled me. The job changed 3 weeks after I got hired, and got stuck in a role that’s just not a good fit. Gave it 6 months of honest effort and I’m ready to start job hunting.
I saw this recruiter make a post on LinkedIn, and I liked working with them the first time, and I want to reach out. But I don’t know what they’ll think.

Hey gang. If you exited BL or are looking to exit, where did you go and, more importantly, how did you figure out the path? I sometimes feel like career steps after BL for most associates are organic and less deliberate. But I’m lost with where to go next with my career. Entering fourth year PE M&A associate. Ready to leave.

Hi. People Manager here. I've been one for 12 years now and I encourage my team to not be "yes" people. At this time, it feels like my manager wants me and my team to be yes people for her. How do I deal with this? I've never been a yes person and I don't preach this to my reports. I don't know what to do. Help?

Hey everyone! I am working on a report with the intention of updating the products that a specific customer uses. Currently, the data is arranged with the unique ID in Column A, and associated products in Column B. However, each product has its own row so company 1234 might have 5 rows and company 5678 might have 20. What I need to do is collect the product data for each unique company and put it into a single row, separated by a comma(s). I am at a crossroads, any suggestions?

I am a new (lateral) associate at a small firm where everyone currently works from the office. When I started, I wasn’t told specific firm hours. I’ve tried to figure out when to come and go based upon when the partners arrive and leave, but their schedules are very inconsistent. The other associates don’t have helpful guidance for me. Assuming that if I ask the partners they’ll say to use my discretion, what are reasonable hours to keep?
