Years of senior level management experience. I'm in the same boat as you. Most corporations that have VP of Operation positions have an HR dept that screens resumes. If you don't have the right hot words and experience levels in your resume, you never even get a call back. They hire a resume at companies like those....not the person behind the resume.
Hi, some of this is dependent on the size of the organization you’re interested in. You may be able to make VP a little sooner in a smaller, more rural setting, but generally it would be manager, director, then VP. Using myself as an example, I was a operations manager for 3 years and my role grew over time to take on additional areas before being promoted to a director role more recently. Some have been more fortunate in terms of timing, but in the case of a VP I think at a minimum you’re likely looking at 7-8 years, with at least 4 at a Director level. I’ve known people that have been exceptions but it’s within 1 organization where they essentially got fast-tracked. Hope that helps.
I think after a year in the role, it’s time to be transparent with your leader regarding aspirations. Obviously you want to be tactful, but I think during a performance review or 1:1 it’s perfectly fine to approach them and let them know that you have an interest in growing with the organization, both in terms of skills and professionally. Then you pivot to asking for help in achieving this goal, what advice they have, etc. You can also ask if there are opportunities to expand your capabilities or additional projects to do so. I think this approach should help in any good organization with strong leaders.
