When I do my hours I specify work location as Pennsylvania rather than Philadelphia (two different tax codes to select from here). I don’t pay city wage tax this way. If you’re paying in error for some reason, you can file a wage tax refund petition with the city to get a refund, but its a pain.
To actually answer your question though, no, you shouldn’t be paying city tax if you don’t live in philly and don’t physically work in philly.
I only had to do the petition for my first year because I was set up as a resident in error. It was over $4k that I got back for the one year so worth it. Since it’s been fixed my annual city tax is only around $500 for the few days I’m in the office plus holidays and vacation (which default to the city tax code for some bizarre reason).
I’ve never bothered to petition the city for it. I think the only way to not have it withheld is to not be mapped to a Philly office address. The wage tax is however less for non-residents.
Thanks P-Dubs. So you still get taxed on the few days in the city huh? It doesn’t work on a threshold basis where you start paying the taxes only after exceeding a certain number of hours per year? Either way it’s better than losing 3.5% off your entire annual pay
