If you could redo one compensation negotiation, what would you change? Asking more questions? Holding your number a bit longer? Looking beyond base pay?

I'm pretty sure I had a recruiting manager who pressured me to lowball myself because they wanted a bigger commission. I wish I had not been bullied out of asking for what I was worth. That definitely held my salary back for a few years, just because I didn't want to be seen as rude.

That’s tough, and unfortunately not uncommon. It’s frustrating when external pressure influences how we value ourselves, especially in moments that shape long-term earning potential. The line between being collaborative and being talked down can be thin, particularly when you don’t want to come across as difficult.
Looking back, what signals do you think would help you spot that kind of pressure earlier in future negotiations?

I would've asked for more. I countered 10% over the initial offer and it was accepted immediately. Makes me think I definitely could've gotten 20%, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Thanks for the honest reflection. When an offer is accepted immediately, it does make you wonder where the real ceiling was. At the same time, it shows you knew your value enough to counter in the first place, which many people don’t do.

I would have itemized the every benefit and broke down the medical benefits. I got screwed after leaving my last role because my deductible was double and premiums were also double. I also lost 750 a year into my HSA where as Allstate included a none.

I also would have negotiated more PTO which I was told couldn’t happen and then when I got to the company I told it was negotiable.

Thanks and That’s a really important point. We focus so much on base and bonus that the fine print in benefits can quietly shift the real value of an offer. A higher deductible, increased premiums, no HSA contribution, or less PTO can easily offset what looks like a pay bump on paper.

It’s also frustrating to hear something isn’t negotiable, only to later find out there was flexibility. That’s where transparency makes a big difference.

Looking back, what specific questions would you now ask upfront to make sure you have a full picture before signing?

Why do people in m&a tax make so much more than regular / international? Is the work that much harder / more challenging? It seems like they mostly just coordinate with other teams. Basically like jack of all trades but master of none?

Part of me thinks they can charge higher fees because they’re on a transaction and seen less as a “cost” center. On the sell side they’re helping generate revenue and on the buy side they’re doing the same, although not immediately
