The firm might have a referral bonus for associates (many do) so it might make a difference to the associate. It’s also always better to have someone on the inside willing to go to bat for you.
It makes a difference for the referring associate as they may make a bonus if you are ultimately hired. What it means for you depends on how they are viewed by their leadership
Always better to be referred. As noted above, it has to be by someone who has some respect with someone to whom they can kick you up the food chain. That's what matters. So someone in the department will be in direct contact with relevant people, which helps. But anything is better than a cold application.
Helps to get your resume to the top. If they are very junior or you don’t know each other well, it won’t carry much weight. Getting a referral, regardless, is almost always the better choice.
Referrals definitely still make a difference, though it varies on how much of a difference by the firm. However, in my experience referrals still take more priority than someone just applying on their own. I would definitely still try to get a referral.
