If you were down to two candidates, one who is a better cultural fit or one with more technical skills and knowledge, which one would you go with? I thought I should choose the one with the skills because culture can be acquired or learned but I listened to the decision of leadership, and here we are, stuck with someone who has a lot of important skills to be taught. And I'm still the one to blame? This is the most ridiculous job.

Definitely would go with your first choice. Culture fit is important but is it really more important than a team member who can actually contribute to the important work that needs to be done?

like

right? I imagine the other team members would feel a bit frustrated

Better culture fit as long as they were willing to learn the technical skills. I find it infinitely easier to teach the technical skills than to guide them into fitting in with the culture. The culture/people fit tends to be something you have or don't have.

I tend to agree with you. Technical skills are way more important. People can work on being nicer and more personable, but it's not reasonable to expect somebody to learn how to code or other highly technical skills on the job.

like

i agree too :)

Leadership was right. I’ve never fired someone because they can’t learn tech skills. When I’ve fired someone, it’s for lack of people skills. If the new hiree isn’t picking up the tech skills, it’s because you haven’t laid out an appropriate plan to get them up to speed.

I agree- I think culture can be taught often times. In general, your final candidate isn't going to be a difficult and unagreeable person.

Hi all,

I just got a job with Delta airlines and I had an accomodation request to work remotely as I am Immunocompromised. I provided all the neccesary documents to back up my request and letters and documents from my Dr. aswell. My request was denied because the team said they wanted me to have face time and one on one interactions with people from other team (which defeats the purpose of my request) because I have to limit those interactions to reduce the risk of infection. What do I do?

Does anyone know how to make their resume look more manager like? My resume shows:

- I have the skills and experience.
- I tailored it to the job description

The recruiter at a job fair yesterday said I'm a good fit, but to send her an email with edits to the resume to make it look more like a managers one because they have to sell applicants to higher ups and schedule an interview.

I can't wait too long to send it, so nervous as I'm picking at it trying to further change it.

I have been looking at the curriculums for Harvard Business School's Master of Business Administration and Harvard Extension School's Master's in Management. They both have the same requirements, generally speaking, including a field immersion course that serves as a capstone in the Master's in Management, which is fairly new. If I am not able to gain admission to Harvard Business School, but wanted a similar educational experience to become a consultant, should I attend Harvard Extension?
