Generally other firms would have no idea that you've been asked to take a class year cut unless you're listed at a lower class year on the firm's website, which is unlikely. That being said, if you lateraled from one practice to another (or to a much larger firm from a smaller firm), your interviewers may ask what class year you're currently considered. Many firms will allow you to earn class years back with strong performance, and that's something you can ask after an offer is extended.
I was held back on the pay scale, but my firm kept billing me out at the year I “should” have been and never told me “you’re considered a lower year associate now” (it was framed as “your pay will not advance with your class year”). I immediately started the lateral process and had multiple rounds of interviews with different firms. Not one asked me about my class year or what I was considered - at most I got an confirmatory “oh so you graduated law school X year”
Agree. They wouldn’t know.
