Sounds like you need to hire a pricing consultant 😃
Well, for independent consultants it can vary a lot by market rates, rarity of your skill set, your credentials/ reputation to name a few. Perhaps start with why you think you are being shortchanged and have you tried negotiating for more ?
Depends on why you’re taking on the project. You always need to make sure you’re covering your own costs, including fringe benefits, taxes, social security, and everything else you have to pay just for saying “yes” to the job. After that, you need to figure out how much your time is worth plus a reasonable profit margin. If you’re taking the project as a “business builder” with the aim of getting more jobs from that client or getting contacts & referrals, you might want to price by the job, with a lot of caveats in the contract about change orders, time limits, deliverables, and other factors that could really dilute what you clear at the end.
