I’m a 3rd-year in Baltimore making $140k. Is it expert enough to start a side-hustle? I’m doing great at my firm, but I want to start a legal blog or a consulting gig to diversify my income. Has anyone here successfully built a personal brand while working for a traditional firm?

When a lawyer consults, isn’t it called “practicing law?”

like

lol, good luck selling your firm on that. You’re usually prohibited outside employment, especially if it involves either the practice of law or services your firm offers

Hey cuz, yes you can and you will. Get that money. Just don’t use your real name for the blog. Consulting, I would stick to non-compliance related stuff. So, business strategy, stuff like that

Guilty. I’m a wage slave till the day I die. But I’m in-house and am overpaid for the amount of work I need to do.

I doubt your firm would permit that type of moonlighting. You’re better off writing articles for your firm to generate business and build a book.

Potentially dumb question here: I am starting law school soon and will not be employed (net income of $0 assuming I don’t get a good summer internship next summer). Does it make sense for me to sell my personal investments next year (assuming my income will still be zero) so I’m paying a 0% capital gains tax rate? I’d just rebuy all of the same stocks immediately… am I missing something?

Have a call on Friday with the CEO of an environmental entrepreneurship non-profit. It could lead to a professional opportunity and maybe even billable work I can refer to my firm down the line. I’m going in with an open mind but little concrete information on his entity and goals and ways I could get involved. What questions would you ask such a person?

I’ve tried to figure out when to come and go based upon when the partners arrive and leave, but their schedules are very inconsistent. The other associates don’t have helpful guidance for me. I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
