You haven’t lost your sanity. Plenty of people switch from industry to PA later in their career. Mid 30s is somewhat unusual but not too unusual; I did the exact same thing.
It also depends on what your career goals are. Many people are completely cool with doing the same industry job year after year with limited career advancement, but sounds like you want to broaden your skillset and see different things. Having some public under your belt will definitely help you see more and hopefully you can springboard to something better after a few years in public (Ie a job in private with better WLB paying 200k+)
You could probably go in as an experienced senior if you didn’t want to try for manager. This is what I did. 1.5 years later I was promoted to manager, and now I’m looking for senior manager positions in private for $100,000 more than I’m making now, and companies are still talking to me even after I make that ask
Thank you 😊 I appreciate your response. I am definitely looking to broaden my skillset and learn from smart people who bust their asses everyday, either for a pretty paychq or for something more.
I'm too young to feel stalled in my career but I do. I need to unlearn making my career my identity, but I also cannot help but want to learn and do more. I try to travel a ton and read and volunteer but I need a change in my 9-5.
If not losing my sanity, am I just being naive?! I see my coworkers who are a decade older than me doing the same work at the same level and everyone is just low-key miserable and comfortable. I can't help but see it as a scary reality check or caution that ...that's not the life I want for myself.
Maybe....that's just adulting and I should just stop whining...?! 🥲
I'm not sure PA could afford you, but it never hurts to try something new! You aren't crazy. I'm nearing 40... and I've job hopped a lot the last few years... nothing quite feels like home I think we all go through this. It's kind of ridiculous to make such good money and feel so unsatisfied at work. Kind of waiting for my kids to graduate and go into business for myself... thinking client advisory services.
Good luck in your pursuits!!!
1. I appreciate your response Controller1. I job hopped in my 20s and it was always lateral moves bc I felt like I didn't belong anywhere. I definitely miss job hopping though, just for the rush of starting something new like having a clean slate.
2. I'm Canadian so definitely underpaid 🫠🥲 compared to American counterparts but thats besides the point. While I'd love to get paid a shit ton, I think as long as I'm not getting paid like a fresh grad and work with great managers and be put on good projects or clients that I could learn from, I am thinking...perhaps it's worth it?
3. As i get older, my confidence has gotten better (on some days) and I appreciate my colleagues who have over the years encouraged me to shoot for more because of my drive and tenacity when I show up to work the way I want to show up. There must be something better out there.... right...? Right people?!
I switched from private industry for over 30 years to PA! I did this at 57 years old. Granted I am not a career driven woman, as I did not want the stress of a managerial position due to the stress I already had of raising my kids as a young widow. I did get an increase of salary switching to PA, as I was not at a high level yet anyway (so my case is a bit unique). While I did not think I could even make it two weeks with all the compliance and onboarding requirements, I have been with Deloitte for almost 2 years now. It helped that I was fully staffed from the start, because the networking and looking for projects can be difficult in the beginning. I like challenges and it is a source of pride for me 1) how I handled this change in my career and 2) how I am performing above my peers (according to my latest reviews from the managers on my projects) But it was a very rough transition!
