Okay first of all, in most states you are completely in your rights to discuss salaries. It’s what keeps us informed of any fair treatment and you’re protected to do so.
I do agree that it’s not the strongest argument to your boss tho. Maybe mention it if you think they’d take it well, but also back it up with other reasons: your awesome work, your seniority, how you compare to the market worth, etc.
I’m in the same boat, but I’m being paid less than my white male less experienced partner. So yeah, discuss the hell out of your salaries so you know when to put your foot down (or jump ship)
So much nope. Never ask what others make as a rule of thumb. If you want a raise make a case for why you’ve earned it, not why you’re not making the same as others. I understand these can feel similar in your situation but don’t even mention your partner or anyone else when you ask
That’s maybe why you want a raise, at best. So you’ll need to show why you deserve one. Your point might be valid, but rely on the work you’re doing to prove it.
Imagine if this went the other way, should your agency pay your partner less for doing the same work as you? Set yourself up for your next raise while you’re getting this one.
And it’s absolutely illegal to prevent employees from discussing their salary.
You obviously can’t spin it like this when you ask for a raise, so what will your reasons be then?
Fair
I mean, according to who hired me I did and do. But yeah, I put a lot of effort into finding and making opportunities to get good work produced and have been lucky enough for it to occasionally pay off. There are better senior books than mine, and a lot of worse ones.
How much is your gap? Most agencies have a policy against discussing salaries with coworkers and can get you in trouble. So like CW1 said you can’t really use it as ammo.
Why would you think this is a thing?
Agree with 🖕 if you want a raise sell yourself don't ask for what others have it's not a solid argument even if it sounds fair and obvious to you.
Senior with 5 years, NY is so inflated.
@SAD1 what amount of experience would you consider to be adequately senior?
It’s just how it goes now, SAD 2. I got a senior title after three and a half years, not in NY.
At least the title carries some weight outside of NY. ACD doesn’t even mean anything in NY. Senior used to be minimum 8 years. Unless you were Crushing it beyond all comprehension
SCW2 - do you have the book for it? No offence just curious.
