I’m a sous chef in Chicago making $58K, about 55 hours a week. Is that normal, or should I be asking for more? I’m not looking to get rich, but I also don’t want to burn out for a salary that barely covers rent and groceries. It feels like I'm basically living at the restaurant some weeks.

Honestly, I would ask for more. Either or fewer hours or more money. But certainly not both. Especially in the city, it's so expensive. In my opinion, you should either get a raise or start looking for something else. You deserve more.

Agreed, sir you have being heavily worked and super underpaid. Demand more. You deserve it.

A quick Google says the average is around $65k in that area, and that's not taking into account the fact that you're spending a ridiculous amount of time at work. You should definitely be getting paid more.

Hard to say right now. I’d look at what other jobs around are at. Seems like a lot of places aren’t offering top dollar right now. Restaurants around, including where I am, have been in a hard spot lately. Not making the money they used to and the cost of everything has gone up significantly.

If your management is open to salary discussion you should talk to them! I’m totally all for that. But just be careful because I’ve heard some managers/owners can be jerks and then just fire you if you try to negotiate. If that if the case, I’d just look for another job…

No you need over $60k a yr in Chicago

Hey small agency friends with kids! Quick question. Our agency’s family health care is expensive (ranges from $1700/mon with normal deductible to $1100/mon with super high deductible). If anyone out there (at a small NYC agency) has a better plan and is comfortable sharing, would you mind telling me who your company uses? My kids’ college funds thank you!

I’m sure I care a lot more than the group does, but I feel like because he went out of his way to really mentor and bring me into his group, i feel bad.

A parent of one of my students told admin she thinks it's irresponsible that I won't be grading over Christmas break. I let the students know to get any work they need graded in before the break and I'll get it to it during our workdays in January. Apparently that's not fast enough for her 🙄. Is it wrong that I'm sort of pissed off by this? Should I say something?

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.

Should I try to negotiate a raise or look for other opportunities?

If I should negotiate, any tips?

Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?
